The Model 1906 was introduced as an economical version of the Model 1890, and came with a 20' round barrel. This pump or slide action rifle was produced between 1906 and until 1932, and was the second in a progression of Winchester Pump action rifles that that evolved in this.
Winchester, by far, is the most famous name in firearms. The model 1873 is commonly known as The Gun that Won the West. Owning any firearm, however, is owning a piece history. Whether it be the famous Winchester Repeating Rifle, the Model 70 bolt action hunting rifle or any other make of firearm, owning a firearm is owning a piece of history. Part of it is due to the stories behind these weapons and because a well-made firearm can last centuries. Discovering the history of your Winchester can be an easy, straightforward process that will enhance the enjoyment of ownership.
Identify the firearm. You should be able to identify the make, caliber and type of firearm. Most often, the information you need will be found in any instruction manual you have for the weapon. It will also be stamped on the right side or left side of the barrel, usually just ahead of the chamber.

Simply click on the model number of your firearm and enter the serial number.
Do a Records Check. The Cody Firearm Museum, part of the non-profit Buffalo Bill Historical Center, can provide you with a detailed record of your Winchester firearm for fees ranging from $35 to $250 as of July 2010. With a serial-number search they may be able to tell owners such things as shipping dates, warehouse shipped from, trigger and stock information as well as other features of the firearm.

- If possible, I'd like to get in on this. One of my Winchesters is a Classic Sporter,.270 w/Boss. It has a strange Serial Number according to the others listed on this thread: G100XX.
- It's very interesting that Winchester Serialization indicates that the first Winchester 50 was serial 1000. The first Winchester 59 was serial 1000. No Serial records shown after the model 59. I think any serial number below 1000 would be a unique find. Looks like Ron from SA has a unique one with the Italian engraving.

THE HISTORY OF WINCHESTER HISTORIC SERIAL NUMBER RECORDS.
There are many 'legends' about why the historic serial number records for Winchester rifles and shotguns are not complete or why they are not always verifiable. A few reasons cited are:
- A fire at the factory
- Inadvertent destruction (during office cleaning)
- Records simply lost in filing
- Records misplaced between ownership transitions
- Documents borrowed but not returned

There is probably some kernel of truth to all of them. But the fact remains; there is no original, single, totally accurate database of serial numbers from 1866 forward that we are aware of. But perhaps these pages can help you somewhat in your research.
